Back in 2004, when I was about 17 years old, professor Calaican (BH member) came to visit me in the orphanage ‘Casa Maria’ and talk to me about this new project – BH’s college scholarships. I was the first girl in many generations in our orphanage who aspired to go to college, so professor Calaican’s visit and BH support meant such a great encouragement at that time not only for me, but for the younger girls in our orphanage as well, who realized that the ‘college’ option after graduating high school was not an impossible one.

I was one of the first scholarships recipients of the program, in 2005. Since then, I have learnt so much from the wonderful people in the Blue Heron family – from responsibility to kindness, friendship, and most importantly the fact that a little (piece of advice, help, donation) goes a long way.
