Throughout September our Blue Heron team was busy evaluating applications from Romania and the Republic of Moldova. We are thrilled to share that we have accepted nine students from Romania, twelve students from Moldova, and for the first time, 15 Romanian applicants will have the opportunity to participate in the Mentorship Program only.
The nine Romanian students we selected have demonstrated the highest academic achievement despite enduring past trauma. The young men and women will receive up to $600 per year for tuition and will additionally be given $55 per month toward living expenses. Those who don’t require tuition will receive $400 to be used for courses such as English, IT, driving, etc.
This year we are adding a new component and 15 qualified Romanians will be matched with a mentor. Like the other nine students, each will write a journal and meet with their mentor via skype or phone. It is our hope that mentors will help these young people, many of whom have suffered so greatly, to navigate their life and move forward.
The Republic of Moldova only requires nine years of education, which means many students are at loose ends when they turn 15. Most of our Moldovan students range in age from 15-18 years and will be enrolled in vocational schools, while two students will receive University Scholarships. Each student will be awarded $1,200 per year to help with school fees, if needed, although often the state covers tuition, as well as food, transportation and clothing.
